Dog Training

One-on-One Sessions

The great thing about being directly involved in the training of your own dog is being able to see the progression. You see the equation make sense - you see it click. From there, you can go back home with your dog, and work on the new concepts over time, and then simply return to the trainer at your own speed to work on other basic fundamentals.

This is the way it works here at Grey's Outfitting. Completing the training process this way, we not only teach the commands and principles to your dog, but we teach you as well. This will give you the upper hand in the training of your dog, as you will not only be able to effectively train your dog to hunt, quarter, mark, retrieve and point, but when an obstacle develops in training, you will be able to correct it. In today's world of work family and most importantly, children, your dog is just as much a member of your family as you are. Being able to work and train the dog with and for the people it lives with makes the most sense.

Depending on the progress you've already made (or lost) we offer you a variety of options for training your hunting retriever or pointing dog. What we do is offer a complementary assessment, which includes bird exposure for your dog. After we have the opportunity to discuss the dog's current situation, in addition to your goals and expectations, we then customize a training curriculum for you and the dog.

We're in this to help you and your dog work as a team. Think of it this way - a successful team has practices every day, and then games on a given day. Game day is the day you hunt, and in the meantime, I act as your coach. We will build skills, confidence, and troubleshoot. I will teach you basic principles and techniques that enable you to build a foundation on which to train your hunting dog. This will enable you to introduce, teach, and correct your dog as you progress through the training regimen. It's all about training the trainer. We will teach you to teach your dog, and the rest is you up to you. Schedule a complimentary training assessment and begin working toward that finished dog. Give us a call or feel free to send an e-mail.

Boarding

For some people, investing in the dog's training experience and resume are better served by boarding the dog. This ensures that the dog receives an adequate amount of exercise, training, rest, and social interaction with other dogs. Each of these elements is extremely important in the development of an experienced and reliable bird dog. If this is the case, please contact Garret and discuss the options regarding boarding your hunting dog.

When it comes to boarding your dog, there are several options. We offer a variety of of options to benefit you and your hunting dog. Our first concern while the dog is boarding is exercise. Our dogs are all run daily on ski mountain trails for conditioning purposes, and trained on six hundred acres of rolling fields divided by hedge rows. They are exposed daily to birds, all the while maintaining their control by way of yard and field work routines.

Conditioning stays

During the winter months, do you really get your dog out as much as you should? We know for a fact - before we took this business full time - that it was extremely difficult to get your dog the exercise they deserve during the work week. You leave before it's fully light and you return when it's dark. Hunting dogs need to run, think and interact with other dogs during those winter months just as much (if not more) than during training season and hunting season. Don't let the winter doldrums get you and your dog down!

Because we're full time now, we have the time to run and tire your dog out during the work week. We'll arrange to pick your dog up on a Monday afternoon, condition and train according to your specifications during the week, and then return them to you on a Friday so you'll have the weekend to spend with your dog exercising and training yourself. By the time training season comes around your dog will be conditioned and physically prepared for the new tasks at hand and you can spend more time teaching than playing catch up with an out of shape hunting dog.

In-Home training

Another "off-season" focused training curriculum specifically designed to prepare your hunting companion for learning in the field once this snow melts. Inside the home, we can work on subliminal command and control, as well as behavioral issues that often arise this time of year due to lack of activity. By changing the way you think and act around your gun dog at home, you'll be making it much easier on yourself during the spring and summer field training curriculum and in fact end up steps ahead of your predicted deadline.

Continue to work on the elements of in-home training that we reviewed with you and simply call us back or email us to set up another appointment. We tell people - "Treat our training services like a Chiropractor - just call us when you need some alignment!" This is a great way to approach your training mindset in a very low profile manner that's easy for everyone involved.

Seminars and Clinics

Each seminar will offer refreshments and continental breakfast to start the day off right. From there, take to the field with your dogs to cover the various aspects of each seminar. Break mid-day for a catered grilled lunch, and return to the field to finish off the afternoon. After our afternoon session, come enjoy a great meal and evening refreshments, and get to know your fellow class members, and pick up even more tips and tactics to enable you to handle your hunting dog more effectively.

With each seminar or clinic, you'll also be able to either introduce or re-introduce your dog to various bird exposure drills which may include puppy introductions, started dog trouble-shooting, or touch up that experienced dog with some flushing and steadiness drills.

Give us a call should any questions come to mind, and we'll look forward to seeing you at one of the seminars or clinics listed below.
